Researches in universities, scientific and research institutions in the USA for a period of three to nine months. In competition can take part candidates and doctors of Sciences, cultural figures, specialists in library science, journalists and lawyers; researchers without a scientific degree with experience of not less than five years and post-graduate students or applicants on the eve of the protection, who will receive a degree before the start of the grant (September 1, 2015).

Fields of specialization: humanitarian, social, exact, technical and natural disciplines.

Candidates who are actively engaged in research work in areas such as political science, public administration, including the development of democracy and civil society, have the opportunity to choose the Kennan Institute in Washington as a research location. The internship lasts 6 months and begins at the 1st of September or 1st of March.

Requirements to candidates:

  • to have Ukrainian citizenship and live in Ukraine at the time of the competition;
  • to be fluent in the English language at a level sufficient for professional communication in an English academic environment;
  • to return to Ukraine for 2 years after completion of the grant period according to the requirements of J-1 visa, which is due to exchange program.

* Cannot participate in the contest employees (and their immediate family members: husbands/wives, children, sisters, brothers, parents, etc.) from Embassy of the United States of America and US government agencies, members of the diplomatic mission of the USA in Ukraine; Fulbright Program in Ukraine and other organizations, training and exchange programmes funded by the USA State Department. The ban will take effect one year after completion of services or work under the contract in specified institutions and organizations.

** Cannot participate in the competition the citizens of Ukraine who permanently reside in the USA for 5 years; those who have a permit for permanent residence in the USA; students who study at American universities at the time of the competition.

*** Those who have previously obtained a visa category J-1 and J-2 can be supplied to the Program no earlier than 2 years after returning to Ukraine. This requirement does not apply to certain participants in the exchange programs of the category J-1, which are not subject to the requirement of a two-year stay in their country of residence, for example, programs Summer Work and Travel (see commentary on visa).

Conditions of grant:

The duration of the grant – 3-9 months. The program provides a unique opportunity to conduct research and achieve their scientific goals,  to see the world breathe, new discoveries and developments exist in certain industries in the United States, to establish professional contacts with their American colleagues and through a Global community of fulbrayts, with scientists from other countries.

The program does not provide for taking the degree.

Program participants get:

  • scholarship evry month;
  • additional funds for purchasing of professional literature;
  • health insurance;
  • the ticket routes.

The documents for competition and requirements to their registration:

Applicants must submit to the Office of the Fulbright Program a set of documents, comprising:

  • questionnaire with an attached description of the project research and bibliography to it;
  • curriculum vitae;
  • three letters of recommendation;
  • invitation letter (if any).

Project description research and curriculum vitae submits English and Ukrainian languages.

The most important criteria of selecting the candidates:

  • previous scientific achievements;
  • convincing and well-designed scientific training plan with a clear justification of the need and the importance of its implementation for Ukrainian institutions;
  • the potential for cooperation with American and Ukrainian colleagues on projects those will have a significant impact on education in Ukraine;
  • willingness to initiate and implement new courses of Humanities and social Sciences, the dissemination of the best practices learning and teaching.

The selection of participants on a competitive basis takes place in Ukraine and includes the following steps:

  • an examination of documents for full filling and compliance of the applicants with the requirements of the competition (October, 2014);
  • a review of works by American and Ukrainian specialists and identification of individuals who have advanced to the semi-finals (November, 2014);
  • an interview in English with the participants in the semi-final and selection of finalists of the USA-Ukraine Commission (the middle of December, 2014);
  • an approval of recommended candidates (April – May, 2015).

The final decision for the grant is approved by the Supervisory Board of Fulbright scholars  (USA). The Council for international exchange of scholars argues universities or research institutes according to the academic or research interests and professional goals of the candidates.

Fulbright Faculty Development Program

Researches in universities of the USA lasting from six to nine months. The competition is open to people under the age of 40 years with two years of professional experience: teachers; graduate students and researchers who do not have a scientific degree yet; PhD of Sciences (not later than 5 years after the defense); administrators of higher education institutions; staff of research institutions; journalists; specialists in library, museum and archive business; specialists in the field of culture management; employees of public organizations (NGOs).

Requirements to candidates:

  • to return to Ukraine for 2 years after completion of the grant period according to the requirements of J-1 visa, which is due to exchange program;
  • to be supplied to the program no earlier than 5 years after the victory in another contest of Fulbright Program.

During the academic year, Program participants conduct individual research, get acquainted with the current achievements of American universities in planning of training programmes, the development of training courses and their teaching; participating in scientific conferences and seminars. The program does not provide for the degree, but allows the fellows to attend seminars and lectures as free listeners.

To participate in the competition accepts only  individual projects of research and those that focus on the development and implementation of new training courses, update training materials, learning and mastering the advanced methods of learning and teaching.

The documents for competition and requirements to their registration:

Applicants must submit to the Office of the Fulbright Program a set of documents, comprising:

  • questionnaire;
  • curriculum vitae;
  • three letters of recommendation;
  • copies of all documents on higher education (diploma with additions) and copies of documents on scientific degrees and titles (diplomas, certificates and etc), must be certified by the organization that issued them (notarized copies are not accepted). Finalists will be required to submit certified translations of educational documents in English;
  • portfolio (for candidates from creative fields).

Selection criteria include:

  • scientific achievements of the candidate;
  • convincingly developed training plan;
  • the relevance of the project, feasibility of implementation of its results, the ability to cooperate with American and Ukrainian colleagues on projects which will have a significant impact on the state of modern education and science in Ukraine, the practice of higher school;
  • willingness to initiate and implement new courses, dissemination of the best learning and teaching practices .

The selection of participants on a competitive basis takes place in Ukraine and includes the following steps:

  • an examination of documents for full filling and compliance of the applicants with the requirements of the competition (April, 2013);
  • a review of works by American and Ukrainian specialists and identification of individuals who have advanced to the semi-finals (April – May, 2013);
  • an interview in English with the participants in the semi-final and selection of finalists of the USA-Ukraine Commission (the middle of June, 2013);
  • an approval of recommended candidates and identification of universities for finalists (January-April, 2014);
  • the begining of internship/grant — (August-September, 2014).

Finalists will take the computer test TOEFL iBT (Internet-based Test of English as a Foreign Language) in September-October, 2013.

The office of the Fulbright Program compensates participants for travel expenses and stay in Kiev during the interview; pays for computer testing for finalists, provides visa support to the fellows.

The final decision on the grant approved by the Supervisory Board of scholars Fulbright(USA). The Institute of International Education, helps to determine the universities or research institutes according to the academic or research interests and professional goals of the candidates.
